I started with 2 of the same brand, when I added the 2nd sticks of a different brand I noticed an improvement right away probably because now I added an extra 8 gigs and for 16 total and now using all 4 channels. I just ordered 32GB 4 sticks total of the same brand and after watching this im excited to so the performance gain when its setup proper.

  • Heads up, if you have two 16gb sticks, and 2 8gb sticks, make sure you have the larger modules in the primary slots. I have two sets of Vengeance 3200 from Corsair, 2 are 8gb, 2 are 16gb. I accidentally had the 8gb sticks in the main slots after updating motherboard and CPU to 500 series and 5000 series. All of my corsair peripherals would randomly shut off (something AMD is having issues with on 500 series boards currently). However, when I switched them all issues ceased, and performance increased.

  • Had 2x8 Kingston HyperX Predator 3200 working fine at their speed. Then got another 2x16 of exactly the same RAM. Couldn't run at 3200 on all 4 sticks. Have to live with it at 2933. Atleast i don't notice any difference in performance. Plus i got a huge size increase from 16 to 48 gigs.

I had to clock down one pair so they all ran at the lower speed of the new set, if you dont mind spending a day or two clearing your CMOS until something works then yeah do it. I wouldn't recommend it if you were buying a 2nd set brand new and couldnt buy the same as the originals as there is no guarantee it will even work.

  • 5:30 _"While your friend might have no trouble..."_ See now, that is the false dichotomy in videos like this. The theorectical friend is actual just the same person but with different RAM and MBoard kits. A much more realistic comparison would be the fact that most people are going to be using DDR3 on many motherboards and a bag of RAM with say 2GB sticks at 75p each ($1). So many things can go wrong (even with great quality RAM) that trial and error ends up playing a huge part, so many people are better off having multiple motherboards and bags of RAM so they can at least get a few configurations working so their 2GB sticks (at $1 sometimes even at 1600MHz) give them 8GB in four sticks ($4). Given enough combinations, you'll get something working well enough. That approach wins everytime. Be more honest and look at why people mix RAM. They know what they are doing is a cheat or workaround. Unless you are made of money (and people in the comments simply are not) something will break on your PC one day or you get robbed or something (or divorced and you lose a PC in a house move etc). Being able to replace a PC part with some cheap "crappy" thing is a lifesaver and a much better philosophy. And before you say "DDR4 is better", I know. That is the point of them saving so much money on $1 CPU chips and cheap DDR3 RAM... So that eventually you plan out getting a DDR4 system which is perfect and you never upgrade it or change anything apart from maybe a planned GPU upgrade once only when prices plummet years later. So like you stick in some nvidia1030 which barely runs dx12, and then years later you plonk it a fast GPU for cheaper. As for DDR4 RAM in such a rig, you're far more likely to scrape by on a single 8GB stick or even a bad 4GB and 2GB (to give 6GB) and then simply give them away for free years later when you can afford a full kit of 32GB or more. It isn't just people in poorer countries (and I include UK in that) who do this but also the great many "retro" PC channels (USA, Australia etc) because an i5 4460 (or fx8320/fx8350) paired with a nvidia1030 or rx570 is acceptable. Don't get me wrong. There is some nice info in this Linus video. I just kinda think he knows the truth (as I've described) because in his scrapheap-challenge style videos they always left the HDD as the last throw-away item. People skimp hard and they do it on RAM too especially 2nd hand RAM and while knowing that RAM dies like a popped lightbulb sometimes, way before its "fair" time is up (like a PSU can). A CPU though is pretty much solid as a rock. Everybody eventually has a dualchannel kit pair of RAM kill off one stick, leaving the other fine. Having a "spare" motherboard means that you can not only test things by trial and error compared to your main mboard but also it means you can have a home for that old RAM stick to go in (or CPU you used to unlock the bios on the primary mboard). Nobody cares if the lowest quadcore ryzen cpu in the spare PC (meant just as a NAS or web-browser) gets lumped wih the orphan dualchannel stick with poor performance. It is a spare PC if your main PC breaks and the MBoard is the only bit that costs anything (or maybe a few quid on the ryzen but meh). That mboard is going to get all manner of orphan dualchannel sticks in its four slots and they now it will run god-awfully slow with some heaving VM on one core just to make linux logs and cron jobs while mswindows runs on the remaining 3cores. It's the PC nobody wants to admit owning but they cannot live without it when difficult times arrive. A jalopy PC is fine and should be expected to be owned, so plan it.

  • I think the most interesting configs to test would have been mixing paired sticks. Realistically for anyone building their own systems (i.e. excluding laptops and prebuilt systems) except perhaps for those odd people still happy with 8GiB, I imagine anyone building their own system is going dual channel. I mean we've had it since DDR days and the price difference between 2x8GiB vs 1x16GiB etc is generally small most of the time. And putting aside performance improvements, there's just more room for head aches going single channel if you're ever likely to upgrade. And when upgrading, you're also more likely to again get paired sticks. (By paired, I don't necessarily mean a kit. I mean probably most people do get kits nowadays. However especially at the low end, getting 2 sticks of the same model at the same time counts is probably not that uncommon but it counts as paired to me.) So it would have been good to see more tests of how well 2 different paired sticks work together, especially different die. Both same capacity and differing capacity (e.g. 2x8GiB combined with 2x16GiB or 2x16GiB combined with 2x32GiB). I suspect these would often actually work better than 2 different sticks in a dual channel config even if 4 sticks is harder on the IMC, but that's just a guess rather than based on any data.

  • On my quite old pc, which originally run a 4gig ddr3 module a lot of years ago I had no problem whatsoever when I've bought an extra 8 gig to it for a complete 12 gigs of ram. It had an i3 3xxx in it. And it still runs in one of my relatives pc with a different mb cause the original died apparently... To be honest tho, most ppl don't even bother with even setting the memory to it's rated speed, so while these experiments are interesting nonetheless, the target audience would probably either leave it on stock speeds or wouldn't do such atrocities at all. Speaking of ryzen. My first ryzen build run on a 2700x and it didn't post with 2 compatible modules when I inserted it to the wrong alternating slots (a1b1 instead of a2b2 probably). Point being that this new guy is much more sensitive to ram, than my really old Intel system.

  • What about mismatch memory size like 1 4Gb and 1 8Gb stick? I don’t think it wil work but i would want to see it tested

  • I'm running 24gb of ram, 2x4gb and 2x8gb, same brand and speed. Was running just 8GB, saw a deal on 16gb, threw them all to see if there was any issues and it's been all good. I can now have chrome and game open with no stutter.

  • I bought a 2666 Hz set of 16GB RAM and my i7 6700 can only run 2133 Hz RAM :( So it downclocked the RAM. Well, it runs really good, but I probably threw a few Euros out the window. It was only 70€ so it isn't that bad.
